Man Held After Sword Attack On Companion On Mount Baldy Trail

Authorities say a sword-wielding hiker nearly severed the arm of another man during a confrontation on a Mount Baldy mountain trail.

Los Angeles sheriff's officials say 26-year-old Wesley Brockway of Ontario was booked for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon a short time after yesterday's afternoon attack.

A sheriff's sergeant says Brockway remains jailed today.

Investigators say three men set off yesterday to meet a friend along the trail north of Los Angeles when an argument escalated and one of the hikers started swinging a baseball bat and another pulled out a large sword.

The wounded man -- whose name was withheld -- was hospitalized
at San Antonio Community Hospital.

His condition has not been disclosed.

Detectives are heading back up the mountain today to find the sword.
