A bid to make English the official language of Bakersfield has failed.
The city council also shot down another proposal yesterday that
would have made clear that Bakersfield is not a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.
The council did approve a resolution calling on the federal government to enact immigration reform.
After the meeting, opponents of the English-only and the sanctuary resolutions praised the council for making the decision.
