50,000-Plant Marijuana Garden Uprooted In Santa Barbara County

Some 50,000 pot plants were uprooted after authorities discovered a massive marijuana garden along rural Highway 1 south of Lompoc.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department used machetes, chain saws and a helicopter yesterday to get rid of plants growing six-feet-tall.

The eradication effort was expected to be completed later today.

The value of the pot was estimated at $160 million.

Sheriff's investigators say the marijuana was growing on the San Julian Ranch, but the property owner was unaware his land was being
used to grow marijuana.
