CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada retailers are expecting a merrier holiday shopping season this year.

The Retail Association of Nevada on Tuesday projected spending could increase as much as 7 percent over last year and outpace spending on the national level.

Association President Mary Lau says if Nevada consumers follow national trends, spending in the state is expected to reach $1.6 billion this year.

But she adds that figure could reach as high as $1.7 billion if the growth rate for taxable sales this year in the Nevada continues.

A recent Gallup poll projected consumers nationally expect to spend an average $786 this holiday season, up 2.1 percent from last year's average of $770 and the highest level since 2007.
