RENO, NV - The lighting of the holiday tree in downtown Reno has made it official: the holiday season is here.

Families gathered together to countdown the lighting of the tree.

The Billinghurst Middle School Choir sang carols before the tree lighting. But is the tree lighting a little too early? Mary Ann Wooley thinks so.

"They probably should have waited till after Thanksgiving, but there's a lot of kids here, a lot of energy and it feels like Christmas," says Wooley.

Tuesday night was also packed with ice skating and free hot chocolate. Anyone who donated clothing items to the Salvation Army got a free skate rental.

To celebrate the opening of the rink, a special visitor came in from the North Pole. For not, Santa has to head back to the North Pole because he has 36 days before making some special deliveries, but who's counting?

The tree has a thousand lights, and is a 40-foot-giant Sequoia donated by Raleys on Mayberry Avenue.
