Heavy Flooding Forces Arizona Rescues, Road Closure

PHOENIX (AP) - Heavy rains forced the rescue of an infant and at least eight other people from flooded Arizona roads and forced the closure of a well-traveled highway.

The dust storm and monsoon blew through the Phoenix area late Tuesday, flooding some streets in Anthem and along I-17.

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/NlKwNl ) reports firefighters rescued several people who were trapped in their vehicles Tuesday night on a highway west of I-17. No injuries were reported.

Drivers on that part of State Route 74 were rerouted Wednesday because of the flooding. The route is popular with drivers heading to or returning from Las Vegas. Officials say motorists can take Loop 303 as an alternative east-west route.
