WASHINGTON (AP) - The death toll from weekend storms that left
more than 3 million without power at its peak has risen to 22.

Officials in Virginia said Monday that three more deaths were being blamed on the storms in that state. In Maryland, officials said they recovered the body of a man who had gone missing while boating early Saturday, bringing the national toll to 22.

Deaths also have been reported in Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.

Temperatures were approaching or above 100 degrees in some areas over the weekend, and many places were expecting another hot day Monday. The heat left the elderly and sick especially vulnerable without air conditioning.
