LAS VEGAS (AP) - Political newcomer Patricia Spearman has upset
incumbent state Sen. John Lee in the Nevada Democratic primary.

Spearman defeated Lee in the race for Las Vegas-area Senate District 1, taking a commanding lead in early tallies Tuesday.

Lee had the support of the Democratic establishment and amassed more than $200,000 in his re-election bid.

Spearman raised little more than $13,000. The gay minister was backed by conservationists who targeted Lee because he sponsored a bill last year to change a state partnership with California that governs development at Lake Tahoe.

Lee also was considered too moderate by some Democrats for his
opposition to a domestic partnership law in 2009 and last year's
Democratic tax plan.

Spearman will face Independent America Party candidate Gregory Hughes in November.
