LAS VEGAS (AP) - Clark County School District officials say layoffs are on the way after an arbitrator ruled in favor of the teachers union in a dispute about pay raises.
The ruling issued Wednesday requires the Las Vegas-area district to pay teachers raises for the current school year and the 2012-2013 school year. The district had been asking its nearly 18,000 teachers to agree to a pay freeze to close a $63 million budget gap.
District officials previously said that up to 1,350 positions were hanging in the balance of the arbitration. They said they won't know how many positions will be eliminated until they determine how many teachers are resigning or retiring at the end of the year.
Officials with the Clark County Education Association didn't immediately return a request for comment.
