Coroner IDs Cause of Little Leaguer's Death
Posted: 3:04 PM May 3, 2012
Reporter: AP

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Officials have identified the heart condition
that caused a 9-year-old Little League player to collapse and die
while preparing for a game last month at a Las Vegas baseball park.

Clark County coroner's officials say Thursday that Spencer
Melvin died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that
thickens the heart muscle and forces it to work harder to pump
blood.

Authorities say Melvin also suffered from acute chronic
bronchitis.

Vegas Valley Baseball officials say the boy was preparing for a
game April 10 at Rainbow Family Park field when his heart stopped.

Melvin's father and brother, as well as others at the field,
couldn't revive him.

Little League teams in the area held events and sold items to
raise money for Melvin's family.
