Self Checkout Thefts Up

Posted: 7:41 AM Apr 9, 2012
Reporter: CNN

Self checkout lanes at retail stores are convenient for shoppers and apparently thieves as well.

A U-S-A Today article suggests theft - whether it's intended or not - is five times more likely to occur at a self checkout lane than at a lane with a cashier.

Stores like Albertson's and New England-based Big Y have ditched the self checkout lanes, partly due to customer service and partly due to shoplifting.

The National Retail Federation suggests most stores aren't ready to abandon self checkout altogether.

It says new "tunnel" scanners will allow shoppers to put everything on a conveyor belt and have prices scanned automatically - even on unmarked produce.
