Loughner Plea

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The husband of former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords says he and his wife are satisfied with a plea agreement for the suspect in the Tucson mass shooting.

Jared Loughner is scheduled for a change of plea hearing in federal court Tuesday. He will be asked to acknowledge that he shot and killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Giffords.

Loughner's attorneys and prosecutors also will try to persuade U.S. District Court Judge Larry A. Burns that Loughner no longer is mentally unfit for trial.

Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly, says the pain and loss of the Jan. 8, 2011, events are incalculable. But he says avoiding a trial will allow the couple and the southern Arizona community to continue recovering and move forward with their lives.
