SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A pair of wildfires several miles apart in northern California have scorched nearly 17,000 acres and left two firefighters with heat-related injuries.
Both fires saw their reported sizes more than double Monday, though fire officials said much of the increase was due to better measurements after aircraft flyovers.
The U.S. Forest Service says a wildfire in the Mendocino National Forest that has burned some 13,000 acres kept campgrounds closed and a handful of homes under evacuation.
A blaze in Southern California sent smoke over San Bernardino and the triple-digit temperatures left three firefighters with heat-related injuries.
The fire broke out along Highway 18 in Waterman Canyon on Monday and burned 75 acres. Residents were asked to voluntarily leave for several hours and the highway was shut down for a time.
