Snowboarder Bandit Suspect Arrested
Posted: 11:21 AM May 5, 2012
Reporter: Associated Press

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say the Snowboarder Bandit, suspected in 10 Southern California heists, has been arrested.

FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller says agents took 29-year-old Michael Franks into custody Friday, with the help of Orange County Sheriff's deputies and Irvine police.

Franks, of Riverside, is expected to be charged next week.

The Snowboarder Bandit is suspected in heists since December across Southern California, including in Irvine, Laguna Hills, Anaheim Hills and Ladera Ranch.

Eimiller says bank surveillance footage was instrumental in developing leads throughout the investigation.

He was last caught on video at an Irvine Citibank branch in March, when he apparently got spooked while waiting for a teller and left.

Investigators gave him the nickname because he often wears a knit hat, has a youthful appearance, is unshaven and wears snowboarding clothes.
