SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say they fatally shot a man suspected in a crime spree that led to the closure of a busy Northern California freeway after he started a fire and refused to show his hands.
The unidentified suspect was shot at an apartment in Arden Arcade on Friday night. Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman Jason Ramos says firefighters needed to get into the apartment safely after the fire the man started began to spread. But Ramos tells the Sacramento Bee the suspect refused to show his hands.
He was shot on a second-story balcony.
Authorities believe the man was responsible for a series of carjackings on Friday, one of which ended in a crash on Interstate 80 across the Yolo Causeway. The interstate was closed for hours, as authorities searched for the suspect.
