CLOVIS, Calif. (AP) - A former firefighter in Fresno County has pleaded not guilty to charges that he embezzled from the firefighters' union.
The Fresno Bee reports that 37-year-old John Morton Watson entered the plea this week. He is accused of taking more than $100,000 from the Clovis Firefighters Association from late 2004 to 2011.
Authorities say Watson served as the union's treasurer and acknowledged taking $56,000 for a personal hardship, but said he borrowed money from his parents to repay the union's treasury.
His attorney has said he and Watson proposed a plan to pay additional funds back to the union, but did not hear from union officials.
