Crews Fight New Wildfire from Air, Ground in Eastern Nevada

LUND, Nev. -- More than 200 firefighters are working to get a handle on a wildfire that has already burned more than 9,100 acres near the South Egan Wilderness, about 45 miles south of Ely, NV. A full day after it started, the fire is still at 0% containment.

While flames are not threatening any homes of other structures, they are burning sage grouse habitat and range areas where deer and elk graze during the winter months.

Firefighters are using a full-suppression strategy which includes four single-engine air tankers, two helicopters, three engines, ten hand crews, three water tenders, and a bulldozer. However, the steep terrain, sagebrush, and pinions and junipers are making containment difficult.

The wildfire started mid-morning on Saturday, June 30. The cause is under investigation.
