Carson City, Nev. - A Reno lawyer has been temporarily suspended from practicing law in Nevada for shoplifting a candy bar and cough drops from Walmart.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the Nevada Supreme Court took the action Thursday against Zachary Coughlin.

Justices also referred the matter to the Northern Nevada Disciplinary Board of the State Bar of Nevada, which will determine the penalty Coughlin ultimately receives.

In the decision, justices noted that an attorney must be suspended if he or she has been convicted of a "serious" crime, which includes theft.

According to the decision, Coughlin shoplifted the items Sept. 9. He was found guilty Nov. 30 of petty larceny or theft and fined $400 following a trial in Reno Municipal Court.

He later lost an appeal in district court.
