Library Could Close for Public Use

Reno, Nev. - If you use the Duncan-Traner library, you may soon have to find a new spot to get your library services.

On Tuesday, Arnie Maurins, the Director of Washoe County Library Systems recommended dissolving the partnership between Washoe County Libraries and the school district.

If Maurins' recommendation goes through, it would mean the general public would no longer be allowed to use the library.

The library would remain open for students during school hours, but those students might not get access to many of the services provided by the county.

Staffing would also change.

As it stands now, the library is only open five hours a week to the public because of budget cuts.

Now, it faces closure because of staffing concerns.

"This really isn't a matter of saving money. It's just a matter of the staff that we have, the staff that's left, and trying to allocate them in a way that's best for the community to get the most bang for the buck," said Maurins.

Community members say they don't want to see it go.

"This will have a significant impact on not allowing that gap to be closed, when you take these kind of resources from the lowest income community in our county," said Darryl Feemster, a community activist.

Nothing has been finalized yet. Next, the issue will go to the Library Board President.
