Study: Sierra Nevada Adds One-Two MM Elevation a Year

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A new study shows the Sierra Nevada range continues to grow about one-half inch in elevation every 10 years.

Scientists say technology that allows them to detect the relatively fast rate of uplift in the crust from space is helping shed new light on the origin of the mountains.

The work is being done by researchers at the University of
Nevada, Reno and University of Glasgow in Scotland. They say
combination of GPS data and space-based radar has provided them
with unprecedented accuracy in measuring the changes. The annual
growth is between 1 and 2 millimeters.

The new findings are to be published in the journal Geology in July.
