BLM Extends Comment Time for Jackson Mountain Roundup

WINNEMUCCA, Nev. (AP) - The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has
decided to give the public more time to comment on a controversial plan to round up more than 600 wild horses in the Jackson Mountains
northwest of Winnemucca.

The comment period on the environmental assessment that was supposed to end May 1 will now continue until May 18.

The agency's proposed action would result in the removal of about three-fourths of the more than 800 mustangs estimated to be in the Jackson Mountain horse management area about 120 miles northeast of Reno.

The roundup is set for July but agency officials say part of it may have to be moved up because drought conditions have caused a shortage of water.

Critics argue livestock should be removed before any wild horses are disturbed.
