Deputy Shoots Suspect After High-Speed Chase

Posted: 1:40 PM Jul 1, 2012
Reporter: Staff

TRUCKEE, CA - A deputy sheriff shot a man after he led the deputy on a high speed chase through a rural town.

The shooting happened in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 1st in Sierra County. But the story starts earlier in neighboring Nevada County.

At 2am Sunday, Nevada County officials told Sierra County to be on the lookout for a man who had made threats and pulled out a weapon in the town of North San Juan - that's on highway 49 north of Interstate 80.

When a Sierra County deputy sheriff saw the suspect's car and attempted to make a traffic stop, the suspect tried to get away, speeding through the town of Downieville.

When the suspect couldn't lose the deputy, he stopped the car and threatened the deputy. That's when the deputy shot the man. He is recovering in the hospital and will be booked on felony charges.

The deputy was not injured. Both names are being withheld until the conclusion of the investigation.

Any one who saw the suspect before or during the chase is asked to call the Sierra County Sheriff's Office. Any one with information about the precipitating events in North San Juan is asked to call the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.
