Code Enforcement Looks at Campaign Signs
Posted: 10:15 AM May 8, 2012
Reporter: Joe Harrington

RENO, NV - With the June primary a little more than a month away, campaign signs are popping up throughout Reno. Reno Code Enforcement Manager Alex Woodley said there are restrictions on where those signs can be placed.

Signs can not be placed in the public right of way. "Typically five to ten feet (from the road) is a good indication it's in the public right of way," Woodley said. Woodley added during past campaigns there have been few problems with placement of signs.

Woodley said code enforcement would take measurements near Longley Lane and Rock Boulevard to determine if signs are in the right of way. KOLO measured the signs roughly twenty feet from the road. Woodley said the distance for public right of way can be greater for certain roads.

Two of the candidates whose signs are at the intersection said the signs were placed at the location by volunteers without the permission of the property owner. One said she planned to remove her sign. Woodley said permission is generally needed to place signs on private property. People who find signs on their property may throw them away, Woodley said.

Charles Woodman of Reno said he placed a sign for the candidate he's backing for Reno City Council on his lawn. He said several other signs were placed on this lawn without his permission. "I don't see how it could have been an honest mistake," he said.

To have code enforcement determine if the signs in your neighborhood are in the public right of way, call the City of Reno.
