Sparks Marina Undergoes Construction on South Side

Sparks, NV - All of the construction going on at the south end of the peninsula at Sparks Marina is part of the city's $393,000 improvement project.

The city believes that part of the marina is not being utilized to its full potential. It's hoping to change that by altering the landscape there. The city is expanding the usable area on the south side of the peninsula by 40-percent. That means getting rid of some of the sandy beach area and adding more high quality turf. Also, adding amenities like a new walkway with handrails, a retaining wall, and several beach volleyball courts. The city is hoping this will not only make the marina more attractive to folks living in the area, but also more appealing as a place to hold events.

"From an event perspective, it really has been underutilized," says Adam Mayberry, spokesperson for the City of Sparks. "And so this is an opportunity for the city to really expand the programmable and usable space at the sparks marina for special events."

Funding comes from a franchise fee that NV Energy and TMWA pay the city to use its right of ways. A portion of that money is allocated for park and city improvements.

Construction on the Marina project started in April. It's scheduled to be completed by mid-June. The city envisions things like sporting events, music festivals, and craft fairs once that area is upgraded.
