BLM Limits Access to Gardnerville Burn Area

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Bureau of Land Management is temporarily restricting vehicle use in the Ray May Fire burn area south of Gardnerville and closing the site to woodcutting to help rehabilitation efforts.
Officials say the temporary restrictions issued Wednesday will remain in effect until Aug. 1, 2014.
Vehicle use will be limited to posted roads and two-track trails that will remain open.
The BLM says the travel restriction and woodcutting closure is needed to prevent soil erosion from cross-country vehicle use and removal of downed wood.
The Ray May Fire began Aug. 16 after two 15-year-old boys failed to properly extinguish a campfire at a makeshift fort.
It burned about six square miles.
The boys were ordered to pay $10,000 each in restitution and ordered to serve 500 hours of community service.
