CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Time is running out for families to lock in current Nevada college prices with the state's prepaid tuition program.
The program's open enrollment period ends Feb. 28.
Parents or relatives can pay a lump sum or spread the payments over several years. Officials say the program is transferable to public or private out-of-state colleges and universities, and can be transferred to other family members, including a first cousin.
Treasurer Kate Marshall says the program is an opportunity for pay for their child's future education while avoiding tuition price hikes.
More than 14,000 children have been enrolled in the program over the past 13 years.

Actually, this is a scam, people. There's no requirement that the school to which you "prepay" post any kind of bond. Depending upon the age of your child, the school you choose to prepay to today may not even be around by the time your child is ready to attend. While the "claim" is that you do this to "avoid future hikes in tuition," if/when it isn't even clear which school your child may attend, how could that possibly be enforceable? Will Kate Marshall herself pledge that the State will cover any differences in the event the school to which you prepay isn't around, or chooses to not accept your child? Of course NOT. Hence, it's a scam, designed to put money into the NV Treasury, which the legislature can wrangle to use however it wants [just like it's done the past 2 years by making Washoe County/cities 'return money' to it]. It's a scam, people! you've been warned.
