Reno, Nev. - Our local branch of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has seen donations drop by $200,000 over the past year, and that drop in funding could be putting women here at risk.

The organization funds a lot of preventative care for women in our area, things like breast cancer screenings, and even treatments and services for women who, otherwise, wouldn't be able to afford it.

They say the drop in funding is due to economic factors; people just aren't donating as much as they used to.

And that means thousands of mammograms that are usually done for free for uninsured or under-insured women in our area might not happen this year.

If breast cancer is caught early, there's a 98 percent survival rate. If not, that rate drops dramatically. So, an early diagnosis is more important than ever.

"It's crucial, I mean, there are so many women in Northern Nevada who do not have insurance, and who cannot afford the $120 that is needed to get a mammogram. And Komen provides the grants that fund the non-profits that do these mammograms. It's lifesaving," said Abbi Whitaker, the Communications Chair for Susan G. Komen of Northern Nevada.

There was some recent controversy when Susan G. Komen cut funding to Planned Parenthood. That funding has since been restored.

Locally, the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Northern Nevada gave $230 to Planned Parenthood last year.

The organization is reaching out the the community to ask for help funding these crucial services. They say even $5 is enough to make a difference.

NOT ONE CENT will I ever again donate to SGK since they chose politics over womans health. MY money will go directly to Planned Parenthood.

I refuse to donate a penny to Komen until N. Brinker and the board are replaced by a board selected by the Komen affiliates. Right now the national board is a right wing extension of George W. Bush, including a member of Susan B. Anthony and they've hired Ari Fleischer to try and handle the PR disaster. My money needs to go directly to women's healthcare and right now that is a direct donation to Planned Parenthood.

Maybe if the foundation didn't use donation money for frivilous lawsuits that claim they have the right to the "for the cure" phrase more people would be willing to donate. Support Mom's on the Run!!
