RENO, NV - Reno native Max McManus wanted to do something spectacular to honor the memory of the 9/11 attacks on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. What he came up with was a story fit for Hollywood.
"The only thing I could think of doing, and I didn't even know if it was possible, was to ride a bicycle and try to ride one continuous route, connect the whole United States and end at Ground Zero on 9/11," says McManus.
Not only did he pull it off, he set a record in the process. The shortest time ever taken to bike through every state in the US. The best part, it was all recorded by Carson filmmaker Tyler Bourns, who turned it into a documentary called "Freedom 50/50".
"I actually got to be out on his ride and drive support car for a little bit too, so I kind of got first hand experience in with the ride. It was kind of unique for me being in the film industry and learning a different industry at the same time and being part of an adventure that I'll never forget," says Bourns.
The documentary premiered to more than a 100 people at Commrow with 100% of the proceeds from the event going to the Wounded Warriors Foundation to benefit those who served during the 9/11 attacks.
"The bottom line is there are a lot of people who sacrificed their lives to protect our country and the way of life we take for granted sometime, so that was my patriotic contribution back to the country," says McManus.
Now that the premiere is over, "Freedom 50/50" will be marketed to a number of film festivals in the hopes that it gets picked up for wider release.
