Phillip Garrido Pleads Not Guilty
It looks like the California couple accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard on a South Lake Tahoe Street in 1991 and holding her captive will face a judge. Phillip Garrido was expected to plead
guilty on Thursday, but that didn't happen.

PLACERVILLE, CA - The California couple accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard on a South Lake Tahoe Street in 1991 and holding her captive will face a judge.
"In a perfect world, if indeed Mr. Garrido had pleaded guilty today, then I would be in a position to say to all of you, come on. Let's give Nancy Garrido - who is not as bad as he is - a better deal than has been offered," says Stephen Tapson, attorney for Nancy Garrido.
But that didn't happen. Both Nancy and Phillip Garrido pleaded not guilty to charges they kidnapped Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 when she was 11 years old, raped her, and held her captive in their Antioch home for 18 years.
This surprised many of the reporters and photographers that packed the courtroom because earlier this week, Nancy Garrido's attorney had told the media that Phillip Garrido - who also fathered Dugard's two children - was going to plead guilty.
His public defender is now challenging the grand jury selection process.
Outside the courtroom, she didn't elaborate much, but she did have hot words for Nancy Garrido's attorney.
"He should speak for his own client," says Susan Gellman, attorney for Phillip Garrido.
Reporter: "There was never a guilty plea in the works?"
"You know, there's always negotiations in the works, but I told you guys last time, there was no offer on the table," answers Gellman.
In the meantime, the District Attorney says he's eager to get the case resolved.
"My responsibility is to see that these two are held responsible for the enormity of their actions," says Vern Pierson, El Dorado County District Attorney.
A trial means Jaycee Dugard may have to testify. The judge set a trial date for August.
