SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Legal experts believe the revelation that a Northern California couple confessed to kidnapping Jaycee Dugard and holding her captive for 18 years likely indicates plea bargain negotiations are under way that could resolve the case without a trial.
Stephen Tapson, a court-appointed attorney who represents defendant Nancy Garrido says his client and her husband, Phillip Garrido, recently gave what he termed "full confessions" to detectives.
Veteran lawyers interviewed by The Associated Press say the fact that Tapson and Phillip Garrido's lawyer consented to the conversations indicates they hope to strike a deal with prosecutors.
In addition to kidnapping and false imprisonment, the Garridos are charged with rape, lewd conduct with a minor, and child pornography.
