Margin Tax Example

Posted: 10/13/2014 - Question 3 on the Nevada Ballot asks voters to approve a margin tax for business in the state. Money would fund public education in our state K-12. Here's how margin tax works: The margin tax if passed, will create a tax for businesses in Nevada with more than $1 Million in total state revenue. Such businesses will choose one of three options which would pay that 2%. •70 percent of total revenue •total revenue minus cost of goods sold •or total revenue minus employee compensation plus benefits. If a business also pays the Modified Business Tax, that business will receive full credit for the business tax and use it against the margin tax. For example, if a company makes $3-Million in revenue annually: Its cost of goods sold was $2.5 million, and it had $1.5 million in employee compensation. Its accountants calculate that 30 percent of $3 million is $900,000. The company would pick the largest of these three business options as its deduction. The cost of goods sold is the largest number at $2.5 million. The company would subtract that from total revenue, getting $500,000. That number is the "MARGIN" everyone talks about. The company would pay 2 percent of that margin to the state of Nevada to be put in its schools fund. In this case, the tax would be $10,000. Scenario Courtesy RGJ:
