The Salvation Army and the U.S. Marine Corps are once again combining their Angel Tree and Toys for Tots programs this Christmas to better serve needy families in the community.
The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots each will collect donated toys, as usual. However, due to a staffing shortage, the Marines have asked The Salvation Army to again handle client applications and toy distribution for both groups. The need is expected to increase dramatically this year, due to the economic downturn.
Last year, just over 2,100 families applied for assistance. Over 1,400 families have already applied for help - and the charity is only half way through its 2008 sign-up period.
Salvation Army Events:
Nov. 17-Dec. 22 Nearly 80 local businesses participate in The Salvation Army’s Corporate Angel Tree program, including some “public” trees where shoppers can take gift tags and buy toys. Those locations include Ashley Furniture, Bank of America branches, Burlington Coat Factory, Denny’s restaurant (Wells), Dillard’s, Gold’s Gym locations, all Kohl’s stores and KOLO 8 TV.
Nov. 28-30 Sunny 106.9 and other Americom Radio will hold the 5th annual Camp Christmas toy drive. Radio personalities hope to fill an RTC Ride bus with hundreds of toys. Gifts for low-income seniors will also be accepted.
Toys For Tots Events:
The Marines Toys For Tots have several toy collection events, as well as collection barrels at various businesses throughout the Reno-Sparks area.
Nov. 29 The kick-off for Toys for Tots will be held 6 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Mae Anne Wal-Mart. Citadel Radio stations (K-BULL 98.1, Magic 95.5, News Talk 780 KOH & Wild 102.9) will broadcast live.

The radio stations will also do individual broadcasts at various toy drop locations during the two-week period between the Toys For Tots kick-off and wrap-up events.
Low-income families who wish to sign up for Christmas toys and food may apply at The Salvation Army, 1931 Sutro (Sutro & Oddie). Application hours are 9 a.m.-Noon & 1-3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday through December 12th (closed Thanksgiving Day). Applications will also be accepted from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, December 13th.
Those seeking assistance must provide documentation at the time of application. The required documents include:
Applicants will receive appointment times to pick up their toys and food distribution. The distribution is scheduled for Dec. 17-19 & Dec. 22.
The combined Angel Tree and Toys For Tots programs last year provided toys for over 5,400 children in Washoe County.
The Salvation Army welcomes the partnership, but also acknowledges a challenge. Clients who sign up for toys are also eligible for food. That means the charity will require a lot more nonperishable food donations than in past years to meet the increased need. Anyone wishing to hold a food drive or donate turkeys may contact the charity at 688-4555 X 208.
