Locks Of Love Valentine
Reno On a day that’s counted by how many flowers, hearts and candies you receive, one local second grader believes Valentines Day is more about giving. 8 year old Ann Matya believes the more personal the better. And if the gift goes to someone she doesn’t even know, that’s fine too.

On a day that’s counted by how many flowers, hearts and candies you receive, one local second grader believes Valentines Day is more about giving. 8 year old Ann Matya believes the more personal the better. And if the gift goes to someone she doesn’t even know, that’s fine too.
Eight-year-old Ann Matya sits in her second grade class room with more than just word problems on her mind. Since she was five, she's had one goal --to grow her beautiful blond hair as long as she can and then cut it off.
“Because there is somebody that has cancer and she needs it more than me,” says Ann.
Ann says she got the idea from watching a t.v. show a couple of years ago, where a little girl needed a wig after undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
This Valentine's Day Ann says is the perfect time to make the donation.
“Give lots of love to somebody and Valentines has love,” says Ann.
Its not that Ann doesn't understand the complications of cancer, just down the hall in a fourth grade classroom, Ann's brother sits in a class taught by Mrs. Smith. Nearly three years ago Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer--each week she goes to chemotherapy and most of the time comes back the next day to continue teaching her kids.
“It gives me a purpose in life and I don't want to feel like I'm giving up on everything,” says the teacher, Gail Smith.
And it is with that spirit that Ann arrives at Rumors Hair Salon to have her beautiful 10 inch braid, cut from her head.
The braid will be used to create a wig--many times its for a child who is battling cancer.
Now its time for Ann's new look...with some scissor snips, a blow dryer and curling iron,
"Curly for Valentines,” says stylist Irma Gamboa
Ann says she'll back here in a couple of years to make another donation.

To Tonya you are doing a great job raising your children and teaching them and every one elses children to really help out people around us in our community and the sate of Nevada... Thank you... If you start a clothes drive please let KOLO ch 8 news be involved so we may help donate clothes to you both.
Despite all the focus on bad news, there is many of us who do this same thing every 2 years (as long as we still have hair to grow, anyway). While certainly more heartwarming when a child is doing it. Let us not forget to commend ALL who make this resolution, men and women alike. It use to be the salons would send the pieces in for you. Now, they can't be bothered and tell you to look the information up yourself! (http://www.locksoflove.org/) Pretty much the only hair not accepted is bleached or highlighted. Colored and grey is accepted as long as it is 10" minimum and in a braid or ponytail. I recommend braiding your hair before even going to the salon. My last donation was ruined by another hair dresser in the salon (Guys&Dolls Nails on Prater) messing with the ponytail and completely unraveling the lock. Something she had no business in even touching!
This is my step brothers child im really proud of you ann for helping locks of love im sure some person will apretiate your beautiful. Hair
