RENO, NV - Two people are hospitalized after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 80 Sunday morning.
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers say shortly before 6AM near Derby Dam, 22-year-old Yves Nuyts of Sparks was driving his Honda Civic eastbound in the westbound lanes. He hit the front of a Chevrolet sedan driven by 18-year-old Steven J. Gibson of Reno. Both drivers were extricated from their vehicles by fire and medical personnel and transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.
The NHP says Nuyts has life-threatening injuries and alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in this collision, while Gibson’s injuries are believed to be moderate.
Both lanes of westbound Intestate 80 were closed during the accident investigation and cleanup, but are back open now.
Trooper Doug Hildebrand of the Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating. Witnesses or anyone with additional information are encouraged to contact him at (775) 689-4623 or firstname.lastname@example.org regarding case number NHP- 130522440.
