RENO, NV - When Washoe Little League president Kristen Seward heard that the families of two players had lost their homes and belongings to the Washoe Drive fire she didn’t waste any time.
“The league is a very tight-knit group and support has been pouring in from all over,” Seward said. “Everyone just came together immediately and we’re doing anything and everything we can for these families and will continue to do so.”
Baseball player Jack Hansen and his father Ott were there to see firsthand just how much their community cares. The fire took everything.
“I lost my horse, I lost everything I owned,” Jack Hansen said.
“The fire just swept through so fast we hardly had time to get our dogs, our horses,” Ott Hansen said. “
Friday night they watched as teammates and community members stopped by the Little League fields to donate money and gift cards to the two families.
“It’s super, you know this whole community has been like this, it’s just a great feeling to have friends and people around you like this,” Ott Hansen said.
A lot of the athletes have been playing together since T-ball.
“We’re here just to help out the families that lost their homes and everything,” said Evan Seward. “We’re just here to support them.”
“We’ve all come together to show our support,” Damonte Ranch baseball player Billy Damon said. “We’re hoping some more of the players come down to help us out because it’s really great to have all these people here.”
It brought a whole new meaning to the word team.
“Being a team, it means being there for each other,” athlete Jonny Damon said. “It’s important.”
Local businesses teamed up to help with the cause as well.
“We’re a local franchise and we came together with a couple of other local franchises,” SERVPRO co-owner Travis Conklin said. “We’ve just been doing as much as we can for the community, trying to get everyone’s houses cleaned up get people back in so they can get back to their everyday lives. It’s been a real tragedy.”
The league’s board says this is just the beginning; help for the families will continue throughout the season. Anyone interested in helping out should get in contact with the Washoe little league board.
“I want to thank everyone so much for what they’ve been doing for us and the other family,” Jack Hansen said. “It’s really supporting me and my family and I really support them whenever they’re down.”
