RENO, NV - The fire burning about 3,500 acres has evacuated several areas. Depoali Middle School, Galena High School and Pleasant Valley Elementary School closed tomorrow (Friday) according to Washoe County School District.

The Redfield Campus, a shared campus of the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College, will open Friday, Jan. 20. Classes will be held at that location today as scheduled.

Homes are still threatened at this time and as many as half a dozen homes have burned in the Washoe Valley Estates neighborhood. At least 1000 structures impacted that have been saved, a total structure count is not available at this time.

The latest evacuations affect: the Rolling Hills subdivision behind Galena High School. Additional evacuation points include Galena Country Estates, Galena Forest Estates, Montreaux, Fawn Lane, Joy Lake Road, Pleasant Valley, Saint James Place, Andrew Lane, Old Washoe, Callahan Ranch Road and the north end of East Lake Road, and Mt. Rose Highway up to the Department of Transportation station.

This area may increase as the fire grows. For evacuation information inside the 775 area code call 211. Family and friends outside the 775 area code should call 775.337.5800.

Fire grew so fast, fire officials were forced to release livestock onto the roads. The Reno Livestock Events Events Center is the site for all evacuated animals. Citizens willing to volunteer their vehicles and trailers to evacuate animals can meet at Lowe's on Kietzke and McCarran.

Currently there are nearly 360 fire and emergency personnel on the ground, fifteen structural engines, 13 brush personnel, seven water tenders, three hand crews which include 20 members, four crews inbound. Responders have requested fire agencies in California for more assistance expecting eight more strike teams to come in. Over 50 law enforcement units are assisting with evacuations. Washoe County Animal Control Officers are leading evacuation efforts involving animals.

Highway 395 is closed in both directions from Washoe City to the Mount Rose junction. Traffic is currently being diverted at Laramie Drive. Residents are asked to avoid 395 North and Southbound at Laramie Drive.

Pleasant Valley Elementary School has been evacuated to Damonte Ranch High School at 10500 Rio Wrangler Parkway in Reno. Firefighters aren't the only ones hurt by the economy. Every agency that responded to assist with this incident has suffered huge cuts and layoffs, to the overall detriment of public safety.

Reply to Cristian, the cost to close schools is not the issue because every district has makeup days built into their schedule for emergency, this is covered under the budget if needing to be used. The students are not affected. Look at the real issue at hand and that is the lives of those families that have been disrupted.

Do you know the size of Washoe county? Why would Gerlach close? Why Spanish Springs? Why North Valley? Why Reno Hi, or Wooster or Reed? Get a grip. It actually costs money to close schools and disrupts the kids. Only close that ones that need to be closed.
