RENO, NV - The Washoe County School District School Police Department has announced that K-9 Dante has passed away.

Dante served WCSD with Officer Mario Palacios from 2006 to 2012 before he was forced to retire due to a back injury. He lived with Officer Palacios and his family throughout his time with WCSD until his death on June 18.

“K-9 Dante was a great partner for me, and is credited with numerous narcotics-related arrests of both juveniles and adults,” said Officer Palacios. “He served WCSD with distinction and dedication, and my
family and I will forever miss him.

“We rely on our K-9’s a great deal,” said Chief Mike Mieras. “They provide an essential service in detecting narcotics and firearms on our campuses, and help us convey important messages to our students about drug prevention during presentations in our schools. We are grateful for Dante’s service.”

The Community Foundation of Western Nevada, which is part of the Marguerite Petersen Foundation, provided funding to purchase and train Dante in August 2006 when the department’s previous K-9, Yoshi, was retired from service.
