Statement from Superintendent Pedro Martinez
August 7, 2014:
“I am truly sorry to hear the news about Trustee Dave Aiazzi’s diagnosis. I have always appreciated his commitment to public service. He has spent many years advocating for our community and the arts programs that make this such a wonderful place to live.
“I join with the men and women of the Washoe County School District in sending our thoughts and best wishes to Dave, Delores, and their family.”
RENO, Nev. (AP) - Washoe County School Trustee Dave Aiazzi says he has been diagnosed with leukemia and will resign from the school board by the end of September.
The former Reno city councilman's announcement comes in the wake of the board's ouster and subsequent reinstatement of Superintendent Pedro Martinez of his duties.
A public uproar ensued and some called for Aiazzi and other trustees to resign.
Aiazzi told the Reno Gazette-Journal Thursday his decision to step down has nothing to do with that controversy.
He said he was diagnosed with leukemia about five days before the closed meeting with Martinez that sparked a lawsuit over open meetings laws. He said he had planned to step down by the end of the year, but now will leave the end of August or September.
