Victim's Friend Searches For Hit-And Run Driver

RENO, NV - A week after a 25-year-old man suffered critical injuries when struck in a crosswalk by a hit-and-run driver, police still have no solid leads.

A friend is working to change that.

Gabe Kennedy was crossing Wilbur May Parkway in south Reno with friends shortly before 7:30 p.m. on May 8.

Witnesses heard the impact and saw the driver speed off.

"She just kept going," says Colleen Reiter, mother of Kennedy's best friend. "They did not see her hit her brakes, swerve. Just hit him and continue on."

Reiter knows what Kennedy's family is going through. A son in the Intensive Care Ward at Renown. Multiple broken bones, one leg amputated below the knee and worst of all, potential brain damage. For a young active man, life-changing injuries.

"He will never be the same again."

So, she's doing something about it.

She's looking for the hit and run driver.

"I feel kind of helpless and it helps me because I feel I can do something to help Gabe," she says. "It keeps me busy at a rough time."

Secret Witness has posted a $15 hundred reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the driver and she's getting the word to those who could provide that information.

She's produced a flyer with a description of the car and driver and every body shop, auto glass company and wrecking yard will be getting one.

They're being asked to watch for a small, light colored, possibly silver, SUV, possibly a Honda Pilot or CRV with front end damage and a broken bug shield. The driver is believed to be a young woman with blonde hair.

And, if she's watching, Colleen Reiter has a message for her.

"Take responsibility for hitting this young boy. You wouldn't hit a dog and leave it in the road. Why would you you hit a person and do that?"

It's common for those close to victims to want to do something in cases like this. Few are this proactive. Or determined.

"I'm not going to stop working on this. I'm going to keep working on this until we find the person responsible for this."

Secret Witness' number is 322-4900. Callers may remain anonymous while collecting cash rewards.
