USGS: A 6.6 Earthquake Hit Sichuan Province in China

RENO, Nev. -- Sources are reporting a major earthquake struck the centrally-located Sichuan Province of China.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports the quake had a 6.6 magnitude. The Associated Press reports the magnitude was 6.9. The Weather Channel Twitter feed reports it was 6.6 and located at a shallow depth. The Weather Channel adds extensive damage is expected.

The earthquake struck early in the morning on Saturday, local time. The epicenter is close to the location of the 2008 earthquake that devastated the region.
