Two Reno Businesses Celebrate Grand Openings

RENO, Nev. – Two new businesses are bringing jobs and opportunities to Reno. Tahoe’s Red Hut Café opened a new location at Lakeside Drive and West Moana Lane on Friday morning. It’s the fifth installment of a family-run restaurant popular with the South Lake Tahoe crowd.

“The Red Hut Café is 54 years old, the original is on the South Shore,” owner Kelly Gardner said. “We have three of them in Tahoe, we opened up one a year ago in Carson City and now we’re in Reno because I grew up in Sparks and I wanted one in this area.”

It’s their biggest space yet and the décor mixes classic Red Hut with Reno history.

“We bought the scoreboard, bleacher seats, foul ball poles, everything we could out of the old Moana Stadium and we have a baseball room dedicated to minor league baseball,” Gardner said. “Everything else is just like the Red Huts at the lake; old Tahoe, skiing and the mountains.”

The food is the same and they hired almost 40 new employees at the new location.

“It’s exciting, the Red Huts are doing great,” Gardner said. “I think people need someplace fun to go for a good value, a place they can not spend too much money and still feel like they got away and got pampered a little bit. We offer totally outrageous, over-the-top, amazing service and really good waffles and biscuits and gravy. I think really it’s about the biscuits and gravy.”

In Midtown, a new specialty shop is offering more than 120 different cheeses and all the accessories. Wedge Cheese Shop celebrated its grand opening with samples, wine and giveaways.

“Midtown is a great spot right now,” owner Laura Conrow said. “There are lots of great businesses coming in, it’s a wonderful community and we just knew this was the place we wanted to be.”

It’s the only store like it in the area and they hope to cater to customers’ needs.

“Cheese shops like this can be very intimidating so we try to make people feel at home,” Conrow said. “We like to taste out everything and we don’t want someone to go home with something they don’t like.”

They offer tastings every Saturday and classes for those interested in learning more about the craft.

“We have a mini-class which is an evening, after work kind of thing,” Conrow said. “Basically it’s the price of one of our 5-item cheese plates with a free glass of wine and 45 minutes of what we like to call ‘wedgucation.’”
