DOUGLAS COUNTY, NV -- Two fatal crashes on 395 in Douglas County left a total of four people dead over the weekend.
The first accident happened just before midnight Saturday near Leviathan Mine Road. Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Barbara Stapleton says the driver of a pickup was heading north and speeding when he drifted into the southbound lane and hit a passenger car head-on.
Both drivers were killed on impact. The passenger in the car, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car and killed.
The victims from the car were 66-year-old James Harvey of Yerington, the driver, and 50-year-old Brenda Stringham of Gardnerville. The driver of the pickup was 21-year-old Travis Walburg of Reno. Troopers say he appeared to have been drinking.
Then, about 4AM Sunday, a single-vehicle crash killed 43-year-old Rafael Silva-Olivas of Carson City. That accident happened on 395 at Lucerne. Troopers say he was trying to turn from the highway onto Lucerne and lost control, and crashed. He was not wearing a seatbelt, and died after being taken to a hospital.
