SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA - A ten-year-old autistic boy is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the hand.
The incident occurred in the parking lot of a South Lake Tahoe Staples office supply store Thursday, July 31, 2014. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department reports the boy's injuries are not life-threatening.
Police say the boy was visiting South Lake Tahoe with his grandparents. His grandmother had gone inside the store, leaving the child in the care of his grandfather who waited in the car. The grandfather exited the vehicle to walk their dog in the immediate vicinity of the car. Police say the boy then climbed into the front seat and retrieved the firearm from the glove box. The glove box had no locking mechanism. The child then shot the little finger of his right hand.
The child's grandfather is a California Peace Officer and was legally authorized to carry a loaded firearm inside the vehicle, according to police.
Police are not identifying the child or his family due to his special needs. The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office has not announced any charges against the child's grandparents.
