Ten Apply to Fill Retiring District Judge Elliott's Vacancy

RENO, Nev. -- Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Kristina Pickering announced ten people applied to fill the impending Second Judicial District Court vacancy.

Current Second Judicial District Court Judge Steven Elliott is retiring March 12, 2013. Elliott has been on the bench for 16 years, ten of those in District Court Department 10.

All Nevada attorneys with ten or more years of legal experience were eligible to apply for the seat. The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection accepted applications through Friday, January 11th. Now the Commission will proceed with background investigations, public comments, and interviews of the applicants. The Commission will then narrow the field down to three applicants. Those names will be submitted to Gov. Brian Sandoval who will then make an appointment.

In a press release, Justice Pickering listed the applicants for the Department 10 vacancy:

John Springgate, 53, Reno, with Law Office of John Springgate

Phillip M. Stone, 59, Reno, with Phillip Stone, Esq."
