CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The battle over an education tax initiative on the 2014 ballot has begun with a donation from the state teachers' union.
The Nevada State Education Association announced a $1 million donation Wednesday to the Education Initiative Political Action Committee.
Voters will determine the fate of the initiative when they go to the polls in 2014. The measure would impose a 2 percent tax on most business operations after a company's first $1 million in revenue in the Silver State.
The PAC unveiled a campaign website (www.theeducationinitiative.com ) Wednesday to raise awareness about the effort.
Senate Republicans tried to get an alternative measure raising taxes on mining on the ballot to defeat the margins tax, but were unsuccessful.
