CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The state teachers union's initiative petition to create a new business tax for education gathered more than twice the number of signatures needed to require the 2013 Legislature to consider it.
The Secretary of State's Office said Wednesday that the Nevada State Education Association gathered 152,703 signatures, more than double the required 72,352 names.
Deputy Secretary of State for Elections Scott Gilles says the count shows there also are more than the required 18,088 signatures of registered voters in each of the state's four congressional districts.
He told the Las Vegas Sun that counties in each of the districts must now examine 5 percent of the names to verify there are enough valid signatures of registered voters to surpass the 18,088 requirement.
