Ex-Teacher's Aide Charged With Molestation of 14-Year-Old Boy

CARSON CITY, NV - A 28-year-old former Carson City teacher's aide is in jail, charged with sexual conduct with a 14-year-old boy.

Stephanie Mariskanish is facing two counts of child molestation.

She has been employed as a teacher's aide for special needs students for several years at Eagle Valley Middle School.

According to Carson Sheriff Ken Furlong, Mariskanish first met the boy at school, but the encounters took place at her home, where she invited him, arranging meetings through text messages.

Furlong says the boy was apparently a reluctant participant, uncomfortable during incidents which involved sexual foreplay, but stopped short of intercourse.

School Superintendent Richard Stokes said the district was saddened by the allegations, noting that school employees are held to a high standard of trust.

"It's difficult for the community," he said, "when that trust is violated."

He added that all employees are screened with background checks, but "unfortunately we can't see what's in someone's heart."

Mariskanish remains in custody in the Carson City Jail. A preliminary hearing has been set for June 12.
