296 Passengers Rescued as Tahoe Queen Runs Aground

The Tahoe Queen paddlewheel boat ran aground off Regan Beach Monday afternoon, stranding passengers who had to be moved off by the Coast Guard.

TAHOE KEYS, CA - 296 passengers were rescued Monday from a boat that ran aground in Lake Tahoe.

Around 3:37pm, rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe responded to the Tahoe Queen paddle-wheel boat which got stuck on a sandbar near the Tahoe Keys.

Posts on Twitter indicate the accident may have happened as early at 3:19 Monday afternoon.

County and local agencies responded to the scene and safely removed the passengers from the boat and took them to land. No one was injured in the incident.

The Tahoe Queen is still stuck on the sandbar. A special crew of vessel inspectors of investigators from the Bay Area, are on their way to asses the situation. They are going to see if the boat is still safe to operate and help with the salvage mission.

The cause of the grounding is being investigated, but is unknown at this time.
