CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Tahoe-Douglas Fire District is getting an infusion of money from the federal government to hire firefighters and be better prepared for emergencies.

The agency in Douglas County that includes parts of the Lake Tahoe region has been awarded a $2.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The grant money is from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Program, also known as SAFER.

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced the grant Friday. He says the funding will help ensure the district is adequately equipped and staffed to respond to wildfires or other emergencies.

Grant funds are to be used to pay salaries and benefits of firefighters for two years.
