STATELINE, Nev. (AP) - More than two dozen nonprofit groups at Lake Tahoe are cashing in again on the celebrity golf tournament held each July on the lake's south shore.
The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority says the American Century Championship recently provided $85,000 to 28 area charities.
That's in addition to $60,000 the authority - in conjunction with NBC Sports and American Century Investments - previously donated to area high schools, Soroptimist International of Lake Tahoe and other groups.
American Century uses more than 40 percent of its tournament profits to support research for genetically-based diseases including cancer, diabetes and dementia.
Since 2009, the tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course has raised $630,000 for local nonprofits as well as $30,000 for national cancer organizations.
